Introduction

Although with limited resources, the Department is actively promoting the following activities and striving to achieve greater results to facilitate teaching and research, but also to allow for the Department to become more active.

Encourage students to study abroad

It will be a great experience for electrical engineering students to study abroad during their junior year. Not only they will be able to broaden their horizons, but also has opportunity to take courses not offered by the Department of Electrical Engineering. Currently, there are only one or two study abroad opportunities each year, which are offered by our sister university, University of Electro-Communications in Japan. We hope the school can sign more agreement with other sister schools, such as the University of Illinois and the University of Maryland of which, the electrical engineering departments are renowned with high rank in the United States. It would be a great accomplishment if our students can study abroad at these universities.

Actively promoting the distance learning schools share curriculum resources

The Department of Electrical Engineering has a limited number of faculty members and classes and will be unable to provide students with all the classes they are interested. If other schools have excellent curriculum, we should partner with them. Similarly, if we have courses other universities find useful, we should also partner with them. This mutually beneficial method can allow for limited resources to be multiplied, hence, it is worth advocating.

Cooperation with industry

The industry is constantly seeking for talent people. If possible, the industry also eagers to start education and training early on in order to allow for the new students to integrate into corporate culture and production work force. Typically, the industry has better infrastructure, equipment and capital expense than academia. These two sectors can flourish simultaneously if joint cooperation is possible. The Department of Electrical Engineering has always been working towards this direction and has already partnering with several companies. The department helps to select highly potential students and the partnering companies provide experiment materials, equipment, and engineers for training. The results so far have all been very positive. Many partnering companies have offered full scholarships in hopes of recruiting these students in the future.

From the interaction with these companies, we realized all of them are very passionate and willing about cooperation between academia and the industry. Many companies believe they will be able to discover potential core employees through partnership. For universities, companies have invaluable industrial experience and a great amount of equipment and hardware resources. If cooperation is possible, the impact will be highly advantageous for our department. From another perspective, if we can invite company executives to become faculty members and allow them to bring scholarships, partnership opportunities and their career experience, it will be very significant for the department. Hence, the Department of Electrical Engineering will continue to pursue cooperation with the business community actively.
